Ek Cihan : The Story of The Rich and The Poor
Ek cihan : a real motif.
Ek Cihan, Hriday Chandra Singh Pradhan, a renowned writer in various fields of Nepali literature, is a social realist novelist with progressive ideas. The novelist Pradhan’s novel, which deals with the struggles, problems, complexities and pains of the lower class life, reveals themes such as equality, reformist consciousness, end of unjust atrocities, etc. as a message. Ethnic cultural unity, poor living conditions and compulsions are the notable aspects of his novel.
A grave novel based on the lives of poor Nepali farmers and laborers is a work known as a social realist. The subject of this novel is the tragic demise of the working class living under the term ‘grave’. In this novel, which originally presents the exploitation of poverty and anomalies, the sacred and pure feeling that no one is a stranger in the Himal Pahad Terai is expressed by the family of Ashtanaran.
The main theme of the novel is the tragic incident in which the families of Ashta Naran and Shiva Naran are buried in the same grave with the message of maintaining equality and cultural unity free from social discrimination. The novelist has selected working self-respecting representatives like Ashta Naran and Shiva Naran to present the sufferings, anguish, distress and compulsion of the peasantry.
Ashta Naran and Shiva Naran’s thoughts express the need to end the misery of the poor and reform the society in the novel. The fact that there has never been any economic progress in the life of a true peasant like Shiva Naran, despite working hard day and night, has further enhanced the dignity of the novel.
To show the reality that people with both good and bad tendencies live in the society, Dr. The characters of Godatta Prasad and Sahu Surman are presented in the novel. The fact that Dr. Godatta Prasad had to endure injustice for some time due to poverty and hardship and the fact that Surman’s exploitation also exploited Shiva Naran’s family due to lack of money is also a remarkable aspect of the novel.
Shiva Naran’s eight and courage against unholy marriage, the reality of love being spiritual and physical, Harsh Naran and Nanithakun’s interracial marriage, the need for an inclusive society, the need to raise voice against injustice, oppression, can be said to be the central elements of the novel. Progressive consciousness, equality, freedom and desire for a free society and self-respecting thoughts can be said to be the basic elements of the novel.
Scenario of Ek Cihan
The reality of lower class life around the year 2011 is presented in the novel. The novel deals with the complexities and struggles of lower class life in an environment of poverty, compulsion and disarray, especially the family environment of the Newari community. The novel focuses on Ast Naran and Shiva Naran. There is a compelling environment where Godatta Prasad has to go.
Harshanaran and Nanithkun’s marriage, which deemed ethnic and regional unity necessary, took place in an inter-caste region, in which the inclusive consciousness is found. Ashta Naran’s treatment and funeral had to be borrowed, the sun of happiness never shines even after working day and night, the harsh reality of lower class life is found in the novel. Surman’s exploitation, the doctor’s immorality, injustice, voices against atrocities, etc., have been strengthened and enlivened by the natural environment of the novel.
The fact that progressive thinking has flourished after the attainment of democracy, the need for cultural integration, inclusion and equality, the fact that conservatism and superstition have not left Nepali society is expressed in the context of favorable events and natural letters within the novel.

- Louis Mentor says : Hi Sachin, The title 'A dead body' itself shows how serious this book is regarding the natural disasters. Due to the global warming and climate change, the power and gravity of natural disasters such as tornadoes, typhoons get stronger than before, and in fact many people on this earth are heavily affected by them. With this report read, it reminds me how it is important to save our environment and protect it from damaging anymore. I enjoyed reading your report. Louis Mentor Posted 01-07-2019 23:46
- Eco Generation says : Dear Sachin, Couldn't agree with you more that there is nothing stronger than mother Earth. Natural disasters are occuring more frequently because of the environmental damange that humans are imposing on the Earth, which is a really saddening fact. Thank you for your recommendation! You are doing great! Posted 21-06-2019 15:10
- Wonhee Mentor says : Hello Sachin Thank you for sharing your book review. You are right. We must realize the weakness of humans compared to the nature. Natural disasters often cause extensive damage and can ruin everything that human built in a few hours. Though this book is a novel, what the author is trying to tell us holds true. Keep up the good work! Wonhee Mentor Posted 21-06-2019 02:59
- Rosa Domingos says : Hey there Sachin. This book is indeed most interesting and does spell out that with mother nature, everything thrives, but without her...we too are nothing. I cannot related with the countless of survivors of a natural disaster but I appreciate that Hridaya Chandra Singh Pradhan has taken all life stories of those who have gone through the most and placed it beautifully in this book. Thank you for informing us about this Sachin...I am now intrigued and would like to read it. I look forward to more of your work! With gratitude! Rosa Posted 20-06-2019 18:09
